Cove to come of age
THEY
always said Palm Cove was to be the next Noosa. Well it's not going
to be another Noosa, it's going to be an original. Partners Thakral
and architect Leigh Ratcliffe have plans for The Village Palm Cove,
a central shopping and cultural area with a large town square.
This will be on vacant land opposite Sea Temple and roughly half the
size of the existing Palm Cove.
"There will be two resorts, a gated community, 200 apartment complexes,
shops, bell tower, and piazzas," Mr Ratcliffe said.
Culturally, there will be an art and music school with students on scholarships,
galleries, non-stop classical music and an arthouse moonlight cinema.
Not only that : nearby will be home for Palm Cove's new royalty : The
Royal Palm Cove Resort.
According to Style magazine, this fabulous resort is destined to surpass
any holday resort seen in this country. It is described as "pure
luxury yet elegant and stunning in its simplicity, nestled in the last
true beachfront site."
Mr Ratclife said there would be a complete change to traffic flow in
the suburb.
"Triton Street will be pushed through to link up with Argentea
Boulevard," he said.
"We expect this will be the main entrance to Palm Cove while ultimately
Veivers Road will be closed from the highway."
The project, expected to cost $500 million, will complement the remainder
of Argentea Estate which will have high quality residential homes.
Fiesta Palm Cove
The
fiesta will start at 6.30 pm Friday October 13.
It
starts with two movies on the beach. The first one is for kids, the
second (a little bird told us) could be the cult classic The Rocky Horror
Show. (Don't miss it, it's a hoot.) There will be a snack and drinks
bar on the beach.
This
year, entry to all sections of the fiesta is free. You can purchase
tickets to swap for food at the stalls. If you dine at restaurants (they
will be open the whole weekend) you pay the normal charge.
But
be sure to book if you are doing the sit-down six-course degustation
style dinner or the progressive dinner.
(degust
: to taste)
World
champion sand sculptor Dennis Massoud will be there from Saturday afternoon
doing his stuff. If you missed him last year, catch him this time.
Sunday
as usual will come alive with multiple events, colour, music, food,
rides, and street entertainment.

IT'S ALL FREE!
The king is dead : long live the king
EVERY
dog has its day, they say; and Port Douglas has certainly had its occasion.
Bill
Clinton told the world about Port; other world leaders flocked to check
it out; and the big boom was on. It was the town's golden era.
But
sewage and garbage figures have shown that Port Douglas has lost some
of its desirability.
Ken
Dobbs, president of Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce and chairman of
Daintree Tourism said that July's decreased garbage collection and treatment
sewage volumes should ring alarm bells.
"You
won't find anyone who says numbers are up and everything's great,"
he told Cairns Post on Sept 15.
"Perhaps
we need to rebrand the product we are selling," Mr Dobbs said.
"What are we promoting — the luxuries and spas or the environment?"
The
general manager of Radisson Treetops Resort Michael Coe said his township
had lost ground in recent years.
"Destinations
such as Palm Cove have boosted their profile,"he said.
Reef House again shows class
COMPETING
against thousands of entries, Sebel Reef House Spa was runner-up in
the Australasian and South Pacific region spa awards in London in January.
The
accolade was awarded by the global travel magazine Conde Nast Traveller
UK.
Second
only to the multi-million dollar Hayman Island Resort in the Whitsundays,
Reef House's spa was also voted in the top 100 spas in the world.
Jeff
Fleming, who with wife Carol operates the spa, said the award was great.
"We won it again last year for consecutive years. It is a further
endorsement that Tropical North Queensland and Palm Cove remain internationally
recognised as being the spa capital of Australia," Mr Fleming said.
The world loves us here
A
NEW SURVEY has found that apart from the Whitsundays with its string
of island resorts, Cairns was voted the most desirable beach holiday
destination north of Coffs Harbour.
The
survey was conducted in Cavill Avenue at Surfers Paradise in March/April.
Most
of the 600 respondents were from overseas or interstate.
Tourism
Tropical North Queensland chief executive Rob Giason said it was "fantastic"
that Cairns was regarded as one of the most ideal destinations for beach
holidays.
"Obviously
we need to work harder to reach a higher level of desirability to surpass
the Whitsundays," he said.
JOKE
A little girl was always sucking her thumb. Her mother tried everything
to stop it, finally she told her : "If you don't stop sucking your
thumb, you'll blow up and burst."
This seemed to work. The next day, the mother was entertaining some
women at home. The girl came into the room, saw one woman who was very
pregnant, pointed at her tummy and said : "I know what you've been
doing."
