Fiesta fun October 16

INDIGO PALM COVE FIESTA kicks off at 11am, Sunday, Oct 16 for a keenly anticipated day of fun.
If the fiesta two years ago is any criterion, many thousands will flood the esplanade to dine, drink, socialize and be entertained in a smorgasbord of ways. Spokesperson Colleen Were said there will be sailing regattas, surf sport challenge, bands, sand castle competition and sculpture display, volleyball, parachuting display, fashion show, massage area, market stalls, a kid's fun area and more.
Guests at about 60 hosted tables between Angsana and Casmar Cafe will be treated to superlative food and wines from Palm Cove's top restaurants.
Existing restaurants will also be open, and there will be ample food stalls.
The hosted tables cost $950 for 10 people ($95 each) for a 6-course meal, each course complemented with a selected matching glass of wine.
Call Colleen (07)4055 3901 or email colleen@palmcovefiesta.com for table bookings. Credit cards or cheques accepted.
"There will be two licenced areas, one containing the hosted tables and another serving beer, wine and spirits, (entrance fee $5 for adults)," Colleen said. The beaches and all other areas will be free.

Hedley's creeks under control

CAIRNS CITY COUNCIL has amended approvals for the Warren's Farm project to give it more control over the gullies and creeks. At a council meeting on Sept 15 at which 50 interested residents from Palm Cove and Clifton Beach attended, Cr Sno Bonneau said the previous approval had the creeks zoned as Residental 2. "This change means we have more control over the creeks and gullies because they will be zoned Conservation," he said.
Developed by Hedley, Warren's Farm project is west of Captain Cook Highway, east of Foley Road Extension, and north towards Ellis Beach to a point opposite half-way along Novotel golf links.
When completed the subdivision will contain 175 lots with a 10m buffer strip along the highway.
"The development extends westward to a height similar to Island View Estate within the restrictions imposed by Hillslopes Guidelines," the councillor said. All land west of Warren's Farm is zoned Conservation which means "No buildings."
A request by Hedley for another two metres above the hillslopes line to allow for a buffer on the western boundary was refused by the council.
"We are trying to keep this and other developments with old existing approvals as tight as we can," Cr Bonneau said.
The meeting also dealt with Clifton Village Shopping Centre theatre expansion and a footbridge over Deadman's Creek.

Editorial

READERS may have noticed lately that this newslettter has become rather political.
The issues have been hillslopes, rates, real estate development, link roads, local tourism, council business, anti-council business, the demise of a golf course, even nude beaches. All interesting subjects about which this newsletter has expressed an opinion.
But the trouble with reporting on politics is that whereas some people will be pleased, others will be displeased.
For six years this newsletter has sought to please and not to displease. We have often been applauded because our news content has featured Palm Cove and its people only.
We intend to resume this tradition but without political comment.
However, we will be carrying one small banner. It reads: "Hands off our hillslopes."

Letters to Editor

MOZZIES WATCH

I have been travelling throughout NSW and Qld with my daughter and the latter part of our tour was spent in Palm Cove.
I have enjoyed my stay, but I'm concerned there are a number of spots that are obviously attractive sites for mosquito lavae such as improper drainage fall off.
Palm Cove is a lovely quaint place, please don't spoil it by allowing too much Gold Coast suburbia to adorn its shores and surrounds. That would be an expensive mistake.

SPA CAPITAL OBJECTION

Who arranged the new sign on the highway describing our town as the "Spa Capital of Australia"?
Personally I find it a disgrace and extremely offensive and would have preferred something like "The Irukandji Capital," after all, that was the name of the original residents.

No court fight for rates group

THE court challenge on increased rates reported in last month's edition has been called off.
Spokesperson Selwyn Johnston said the group could be faced with legal costs worth several hundred thousand dollars.
He said monies pledged to the cause would be refunded.

Novotel name change

INDIGO PROJECTS have named their new development for the Novotel area Ocean's Edge.

Around the town

HAD a surprise visit from newly-retired Melbourne accountant Gary Burton who decided to visit Palm Cove to see what all the excitement was about.
"I've been hearing about Palm Cove just about everywhere," he said.
Big difference from a couple of years ago when all he heard, he said, was Port Douglas.
Nice to see old Gary again, he's a brilliant accountant, talked me into buying a new car. It's due in three weeks - Ed.

Eye test

Count every f in the following :"....finished files are the result of years of scientific study combined with the experience of years."
ANSWER : The brain finds it hard to recognise the preposition. You counted three. Right? Wrong. There are six.
