the general public. "We have ascertained the expectations of the
public for the park," Mayor Byrne said.

will soon be called for the work.

Inside view lovely
DENISE
AND JIM CORCORAN say they enjoy their view between serving customers.
The
couple's new homewares shop Coco-Nois at Grand Mercure is the last shop
on the Veivers Rd reception strip and overlooks the pool.
The
pool is the one from Ramada days but is now surrounded by tropical plants,
melaleucas, the latest in al fresco furniture, and, of course, updated
architechure.
"We
just love it," Denise said.
The
Corcorans, who live at Buchan Point, were regular holidayers spending
half their year in Adelaide and half at Palm Cove.
Noticing
little retail homeware between Port Douglas and the city, they decided
to quit Adelaide and open a shop.
Grand
Mercure joins other resorts in the area with superb in-house pool settings
: Sea Temple, Peppers, Amphora, Rockford Novotel and Mango Lagoon to
name some.
More on stingers
FURTHER
to our report on jellyfish stings last month, Dr Lisa-ann Gershwin has
said that hot water used on a Chironex Box or Irukandji jellyfish sting
might or might not lessen the pain, but it could be extremely harmful
to a life-threatening injury.
"It
might kill someone who would not have otherwise died," the scientist
said.
Dr
Gershwin said the pain of a jellyfish sting was secondary to keeping
the patient alive.
"The
use of hot water is not endorsed by the Australian Resuscitation Council
which nominates vinegar as the medium to be used," she said.
Our history on the web
CAIRNS
CITY COUNCIL has given us a new website of the history of Cairns and
suburbs with street names and significant facts including those of Palm
Cove.
Did
you know that our suburb was originally known as Buchans Beach?
"Around
1881 it was developed into a substantial farming plantation known as
Buchans Estate growing all manner of fruits including some 2000 palms,"
the website said.
"Doubtless
because of the coconuts, the locals deemed the area Palm Beach. To avoid
confusion with Palm Beach Sydney (and no doubt Palm Beach on the Gold
Coast), the area became commonly known as Palm Cove."
Cedar
Road was so named due to heavy use of the road in transporting cedar
timber.
Caryota
Close was named after a palm tree. "The palm caryota zebina is
more commonly known as the zebra fishtail palm," the website said.
As
we reported in an earlier edition, all other streets in Palm Cove proper,
with the exception of Williams Esplanade, Veivers Road, French St and
Coral Coast Drive, were named after shells.

Ocean's Edge wins award
Indigo
and partners Macquarie Bank have been awarded the Tourist & Leisure
Development category in the Rider Hunt National Innovation Excellence
Awards for their Ocean's Edge development.
The
award attracted participants from all round Australia.
Ocean's
Edge was originally Novotel 's 37ha site and was bought by Indigo in
June 2004 for $36 million. The resort's hotel covers 4ha and has recently
undergone a $2 million refurbishment.
Indigo
managing director Mitch Neilsen said the resort now had a four-star
rating instead of its traditional three stars.
TWO NEW BOARDWALKS
Two
1.8m wide timber boardwalks on Ocean's Edge, which will be open to the
public, are nearing completion.
One
from Coral Coast Drive will traverse the rainforest and return to start;
the other will reach through mangroves to Palm Cove Jetty.
Mr
Neilsen said the boardwalks will provide a relaxed detour off the public
walkway.
"The
route will ultimately stretch from the Palm Cove Jetty to Ocean's Edge
and back down Cedar Road," he said.
